Call for
Collaborators!
Let's Map the AI Value Chain
Even with our 5 Values and 10 Moral Questions framework, we realized that it’s difficult to know what the right action or decision to take when we don’t have the full view of the whole system.
How can we decide when we should use AI when we don’t know the full cost – labor, capital, environmental, geopolitical, social – of its development, deployment, and use.
Inspired by Kate Crawford’s Atlas of AI and www.calculatingempires.net, we want to crowdsource an evolving and interactive map, featuring human stories from throughout the entire value chain and infrastructure of AI from mining and processing of the critical minerals and metals for the hardware to the people who process the data and develop the models, the satellites and cables that the data travel through…we want to try to map it all out.
As always, we have many questions, and we’re putting out this call for collaborators in the hopes that, together, we can answer these questions and more along the way:
-
What does it take to create AI systems?
-
How many human links are there in the chain?
-
What does it take to run and use them?
-
What are the costs of responding to each prompt?
-
What are the direct and indirect impacts at every step along the way?
-
Who gains what? Who loses what?
If you have knowledge of just one piece of the puzzle, we’d love to hear from you! We're also looking for people with knowledge graph programming skills. DM or email us at questions@10moralquestions.com. Let’s work together to ensure we can make informed decisions about how best to use AI in ways that benefit as many people as possible while minimizing the costs to people and planet.

What piece of the map can you contribute?
